Every November, Surin Province hosts one of Thailand’s most spectacular annual events: the Surin Elephant Round-Up. Hundreds of elephants take part in parades, historical re-enactments and displays that draw visitors from across Thailand and beyond — yet it remains far less crowded and far more genuine than many of the country’s better-known festivals.
Having watched the festival grow over nearly two decades running a resort in nearby Prasat, here’s what first-time visitors should actually know.
What Actually Happens
Parades, History, and the Kuy Tradition
The festival centres on the Kuy people’s centuries-old tradition of elephant handling. Expect a grand elephant parade through Surin town, historical battle re-enactments, a traditional elephant breakfast, and displays showing the bond between mahouts and their elephants — a tradition passed down through generations in this part of Isaan.

Book Accommodation Early
Rooms in Surin and Prasat fill up well ahead of the festival — booking a month or more in advance is strongly recommended, particularly for family bungalows and larger rooms.
Arrive a Day Early
The main event draws crowds from across the region, so arriving the day before gives you time to settle in and avoid festival-day traffic into Surin town.
Base Yourself Nearby, Not In the Middle of It
Staying just outside Surin town — in Prasat, for example — offers a quieter base with easy access to the festival, without the noise and congestion of staying right in the centre.
