19 Years On How My Wife And I Built A family resort In thailand

19 Years On: How One Family Built a Resort in Rural Thailand

The story of Ryan’s Resort — how a small guesthouse in Prasat, Surin grew into a family restaurant, sports bar and accommodation all in one place.

A Small Guesthouse With Big Ambitions

Nineteen years ago, Ryan’s Resort started as a modest guesthouse in Prasat, a quiet town in Surin Province few outsiders had heard of. There was no restaurant, no sports bar, no family bungalows — just a handful of rooms and a family determined to build something that could last.

Nearly two decades on, that same small guesthouse has grown into a genuine local landmark: a place where travellers, expats and locals alike come to eat, drink and stay.

How It Grew, One Addition at a Time

From a Few Rooms to a Full Resort

The early years were about getting the basics right — clean, comfortable rooms and a warm welcome for the handful of travellers who found their way to Prasat. As word spread, so did the resort: air-conditioned rooms, deluxe rooms, and eventually spacious family bungalows were added, one project at a time, largely funded by reinvesting what the business earned rather than by outside capital.

The Milestones Along the Way

A few of the additions that turned a small guesthouse into the resort it is today.

The Restaurant Kitchen

What started as simple home cooking grew into a full kitchen serving Thai food alongside Western dishes — the foundation of everything that followed.

Built to answer one recurring request from guests and expats: proper pizza, cooked properly, in the middle of Isaan.

The Sports Bar

Added as the local expat community grew, giving Prasat somewhere to reliably watch a match with a cold beer in hand.

What 19 Years Actually Teaches You

Running a family business in provincial Thailand for nearly two decades means learning to adapt without losing sight of what made it work in the first place. The resort has grown a great deal since those first few rooms, but the core hasn’t changed: a genuine welcome, food worth coming back for, and a place that feels like it belongs to the people who stay there as much as the family who built it.
