The Ruins Worth Seeking Out
Prasat Ban Pluang
An 11th-century Khmer sandstone sanctuary just off the main road, small in scale but beautifully preserved. Most visits here involve having the entire site to yourself — a genuine rarity for Khmer-era architecture this well-kept.
Prasat Sikhoraphum
Five brick towers arranged in a distinctive quincunx pattern, with detailed carvings still visible on the central tower. Quiet, atmospheric, and rarely crowded even on weekends.
Phanom Rung (Buriram, a Short Drive Away)
The most complete Khmer temple complex in the region, sitting atop an extinct volcano in neighbouring Buriram Province — worth the extra hour or so if you’re already exploring Surin’s ruins and want to see the largest example nearby.

These sites are spread across the province, so having your own transport — car or motorbike — makes the difference between a rushed half-day and a properly unhurried trip. Basing yourself in Prasat puts you within easy reach of most of them.
