The Overlander's Guide to Surin: A Stopover Worth Planning Around
Not just a place to pass through — why Surin deserves a proper stop on any overland route through Isaan.
Most Overlanders Skip Surin. That's a Mistake.
If you’re overlanding through Isaan toward Cambodia or Laos, it’s easy to treat Surin Province as a stretch of road between two more famous stops. Slow down for a day or two, though, and you’ll find Khmer ruins, an elephant village, and a genuinely useful border crossing that most overland guides barely mention.
Why Build a Stopover Around Surin
It Breaks Up a Long Stretch
Isaan is a big region, and the roads between its main towns can make for long days if you don’t break them up. Surin sits at a useful midpoint for routes heading toward the Cambodian border, with enough to see to justify a proper overnight stop rather than a quick pass-through.
It Sets Up the Border Crossing
If your route continues into Cambodia via the Chong Chom crossing, staying in Surin or nearby Prasat the night before means an easier start and no early-morning scramble to reach the border on time.
